The St. Mary’s County Science and Engineering Fair (SMCSEF) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to assist and encourage students to expand their scientific and engineering knowledge, pursue a career in the scientific or engineering field, and to practice their chosen professions in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. We provide a venue for students to compete against one another for awards and accolades in order to hone their abilities to conduct scientific and engineering analysis, as well as demonstrate their ability to persuasively and precisely convey technical information and conclusions. The Science Fair provides a window into the real world of science and engineering, beyond school.
The membership of the Board of Directors is composed of volunteers from industry, the not-for-profit sector, and academia who are committed to enhancing science education in St. Mary’s County.
Specifically, the youth of our county are assisted and encouraged through the following activities:
As the SMCSEF Board, we are well acquainted with hundreds of St. Mary’s County students who were sent by our organization to the Prince George County regional and the International Science Fair over the last 50+ years. We are also acquainted with many past science fair competitors who have gone on to attain their degrees in science and engineering.
Being a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit Maryland corporation, SMCSEF maintains a financial structure which funds the registration fees for St. Mary’s County students to attend the Prince George’s Regional Science Fair and the costs of sending our county finalists forward to the International Science Fair. This includes travel for the students and a guardian, as well as registration fees.
Our mission is dependent upon continuing corporate and individual philanthropic programs that support both the growing St. Mary’s County Science and Engineering Fair and its overall mission goals. Reaching our goals will greatly help to strengthen science and engineering education in St. Mary’s County and create opportunities for networking between our students, and local businesses and organizations.
