St. Mary’s County High School Students Shine at International Science and Engineering Fair

Columbus, OH – May 23, 2025 — Three students from St. Mary’s County High Schools proudly represented their school and community at the prestigious Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held in Columbus, Ohio, from May 11–16, 2025. The event brought together the brightest young minds from over 75 countries, regions, and territories to showcase groundbreaking research across 22 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Abril Esparza and Angela Hou qualified for ISEF with their innovative project, Touchbraille, which earned first place at the Prince George’s Area Science Fair. Audrey Gutekunst also secured a spot at ISEF, placing second with her project, Spike Saver.

Reflecting on the experience, the students described it as both humbling and unforgettable. “I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to experience and participate in such a prestigious competition,” said Abril Esparza. “The level of competition and the work that was presented were astounding. The friendships and conversations I had with kids from all over the world are something I’ll never forget.”

A standout moment came when Abril met the 3rd Place Overall ISEF Grand Award winner while both were waiting to be interviewed for an ISEF video feature. “She explained her project with such passion and motivation—it was incredible to listen to. Even after just an hour, I could feel the impact of her work and her deep desire to make a difference in her hometown.”

Throughout the week, ISEF served as a vibrant reminder that the future of science is built on shared purpose and global collaboration. “No matter where you came from or what your background was, everyone who participated in ISEF was working to improve the world, little by little,” Abril Esparza shared. “The future of Science and Engineering was at that fair, and being part of that group truly inspired me to continue working hard for what I believe will make a difference. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we are the difference.”

The event also provided moments of spontaneous connection, like chatting with students from Romania during the Opening Ceremony. “It was a great example of how STEM transcends borders and brings people together,” said Angela Hou. She also remarked that “a highlight of the fair for her was hearing from Dr. George Yancopoulos, co-founder of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. His message encouraged students to challenge assumptions and persist in the face of adversity. We learned that to innovate, we must question everything and never give up—a philosophy that helped bring Regeneron its success.”

Audrey Gutekunst emphasized the event’s supportive environment: “The people at ISEF were not only nice and kind but also very encouraging. No matter where you came from or what your project was, everyone there was so supportive and interested. They understood the work, energy, and time you put into the projects.”

As the students left Columbus, they carried more than awards—they brought home a renewed passion for science, a broadened global perspective, and lasting friendships. “This wasn’t just another science fair—it was a glimpse into the future of science and technology,” Audrey Gutekunst said. “I’m proud to be part of this community and excited to see what we can accomplish together.”  Abril Esparza stated that she believed “the future of Science and Engineering was at that fair, and to be a part of that group truly inspired me to continue working hard for what I believe will make an impact on my community, because together, we can make a difference. Together, we are the difference.”
